A Brighter future!

Our new member Kristian Sandberg from Brighter joined us recently and we were excited to hear the inspiring story of Brighter and its future where they aim to save many lives and certainly make life with a chronic disease much easier. Diabetes is the world’s fastest-growing chronic condition, affecting some 463 million adults globally (1 in 11). Up to half of adults living with diabetes are not diagnosed.

Who is Brighter and how did it all start?

Truls Sjöstedt took on the role of being the “night nurse” for his Type 1 diabetic wife while she was expecting their first child. This turned out to be a very big responsibility and also a very tedious process making sure the glucose levels were kept in check and that the administration of insulin was accurate and not missed during the 9 months of pregnancy. Each time the blood glucose levels are measured and the injection of insulin is performed, it needed to be logged in a book which is to be used for analysis with the doctor during each visit. This had to be done several times per night and Truls was convinced that monitoring and treatment of diabetes could become much more simple which led to the creation of Brighter AB and the Actiste® Diabetes Management as a Service.

Kristian Sandberg, who are you and how did you come to work at Brighter?

A fantastic and touching story that led to a great success and has since last year entered the UAE market. My name is Kristian Sandberg and I joined Brighter AB in August of 2019 as their interim Director in the UAE. After six fantastic and exciting months in Dubai, Brighter AB and I agreed to stay on a permanent basis overseeing the operations in the UAE and expand into the rest of the GCC countries. I come from the FMCG industry mainly direct sales and I have worked as an independent consultant for the last 10 years based in Slovakia.

What were the main challenges and opportunities in opening the Brighter division here in the ME?

A challenge we face is that Actiste Diabetes Management as a Service is an innovative, modern, and disruptive subscription service which is new to the stakeholders in our industry. We need to excel at presenting the benefits for patients and caregivers by adapting modern health technology which empowers the patients on one hand by simplifying patients’  lives and giving them control over their condition, as well as presenting the benefits for caregivers to  become more profitable and efficient.

A ‘Brighter’ future with Actiste® IoT healthcare solution

Brighter is a health-tech company from Sweden, founded in 2007, with a vision to improve quality of life and reduce the complications of chronic diseases. Brighter developed Actiste®, the world’s first unified diabetes care device with a mobile-connected service for monitoring and treating insulin-dependent diabetes. It is a pocket-sized device that combines the necessary functions for daily diabetes care and shares the data with healthcare providers.

What is Actiste® Diabetes Management as a Service?

Actiste® is a unique device that simplifies daily care, enables increased treatment adherence and affords convenience to patients, families and healthcare providers. The device checks your blood glucose, administers insulin and automatically logs and share all information regarding insulin doses and blood sugar levels. It is delivered as part of a subscription service, including global connectivity, different levels of data sharing, continuous replenishment of everyday supplies. The service is designed to enable individualized coaching to optimize and improve treatments.

This is the world’s first medical eSim device. With the eSim, end-to-end security and global roaming are built into the Actiste® device. When you are monitoring a life-threatening disease, connectivity is paramount no matter where you are in the world. The treatment and health data have to be secured and available at all times. With this efficiently connected healthcare solution, Brighter is positioned to make a positive impact, not only in the treatment of diabetes, but several other chronic diseases that needs to be monitored and benefits from the storage of data.

To what extent does this benefit both the patient and the healthcare system?

This is a patient-centric solution. Insulin-dependent patients meet with a doctor on average twice-a-year. In between the visits, motivation is lost, behaviors can change and this is where the problem begins. It is difficult for diabetics to monitor and treat their disease alone. Actiste® engages patients and enables them to look after their health while also having a healthcare professional on-hand to oversee their progress.

Thank you Kristian for sharing your and Brighter´s story. It is certainly a life changing story that will change many people’s lives. We at the Swedish Business Council wish you the best of success.
